Macca's Stories

Andrew was a regular guest at my place in Newport when he came to visit Melbourne. Staying in ‘his room’ on visits to see the footy, bowl as the sole member of the SA chapter, take in a show with Sally, he loved a good musical, to look for a car to restore or just catch up with his great friend Col.

His intention to visit always began with a cryptic text or email. Something like this would appear ‘We would like to inform you that we have updated invoice to due now/nightly for you. Your details are available on link below’. Once a date was confirmed messaging about his arrival continued to keep things interesting. Getting him to provide a straight answer wasn’t his way. On one occasion trying to coordinate movements, the text went like this. Me... Where are you now? Andrew... in your bed, naked! It was always a joy having him as company. Conversations were always stimulating, balancing shit taking with deep insightful views. I was always in a better place and a richer person for having him stay!

Andrew had a regular routine of leaving my place. He would pocket a ‘souvenir’ of his stay. A few days after his departure I’d notice something wasn’t quite right, not able to put my finger on what it was or I’d spend half an hour hunting for something that I was confident I had and worrying about my memory deteriorating. Then I’d remember Andrew had stayed. Usually a week after he’d left Andrew would remind me that it was with him.

Andrew was a wonderful person to have had as a good mate. I will miss his company and quick witted and distinctive sense of humour, one that kept you thinking and made you smile.
