Dad’s Last Song
A few days before Dad passed away I facetime Dad. I was at my Boyfriends house and during peak covid restrictions we had many silly plans to keep us entertained. I was telling my dad about our plans of starting up a band as a household. Dad was very excited by this idea and said ‘I’ll sing for you guys’. Fifteen minutes after our facetime i received a text from my Dad with lyrics he wrote. It was written to the cords of Cattle and Cane - The Go-Between.
The lyrics were:
I recall, a girl being born. A family started, Right here in Clarence Park. A ray of light, She brightens up the dark.
From time to time, Memories are made, memories made,
I recall, working in the shed, Making pokemon, With MDF. Now she’s gone, Off with a giant instead.
From time to time, Memories grow, memories grow,
I recall, after many years, She met a boy, Taller than her father. A likely lad, His name, Stuart Taverner,
From time to time, Memories are fostered, memory fostered.
I recall, I miss her very much. I know all’s forgiven. It will be for the best. As long as he, Wins a flag at West.
For all time, That memory won’t be bested.
