Station Officer Eckert - always good for a reference!
A few years ago I mentioned to Andy that I might apply to be a Rope Rescue Instructor. He immediately offered to write me a reference to support my application...…….

Re: Mark Karran’s application to be a Rope Rescue Instructor.
I have worked with Mark at the Glen Osmond Fire Station for over 4 years. Sadly due to his high use of sick leave and being Absent With-Out Leave on no less than 456 occasions, I have only worked a few shifts with him. I find it strange he has asked me to write a reference but he assures me I have worked with him the most of any current or former officers. I there by offer this reference with restrained conviction.
Mark likes to be called Voldemort and will ignore any other title. In fact becomes violent and abusive when any other moniker is used. He informs me that his peers have bestowed this name upon him because he has a slight lisp that can be snake like. From my experience slurring is a better description.
As a rope rescue instructor he does have extensive climbing knowledge, you don’t get out of Long Bay and Yatala by walking out the front door. It is a pity he doesn’t seem to be able to climb out of bed when we have fire calls during the night or during the day for that matter. He also uses these skills when obtaining tree trunks and limbs for his profitable Firewood Depot. His business operates in a niche market. When trees need to be cut down during the night and when the property owners are away, he is your man.
He is quite literate and a reasonable communicator for someone whose greatest skill is riding a bike. When I say a reasonable communicator, I mean his grunts and moans clearly indicate whether something either pleases or angers him.
He is well placed to discuss the topic of Climbing Safety. Having had so many accidents himself and having a ward bed available at the New RAH 24/7, means his word carries the weight of personal experience. There is no better teacher than experience.
So in the absence of someone else applying for the role as a Rope Wanker I recommend Mark for the role. His combination of skills, knowledge and attitude has him well placed to not only deliver the training but be a fully committed member of the team.
